What you’ll need:

Paper mache letters & shapes

Golden Fluid Acrylic paint

Synthetic hair paintbrush or foam brush

Brush for removing excess leaf after gilding

Sepp Gilding Workshop Water-Based Gilding Size

Sepp Gilding Workshop Variegated Red, Blue and/or Green Leaf, or your choice of Imitation Gold

Pro Tip: You can also purchase the Sepp Gilding Workshop Basic Gilding Kit, which includes Imitation Gold, Aluminum, or Copper Leaf, Water-Based Size, brush, cotton gloves, cheesecloth, mixing sticks and sandpaper!

Let’s get gilding!

Coat your letters and shapes with the acrylic paint. This gives a nice color in case you want any to show and seals the paper, so the size sits on top without soaking into its surface. Brush SGW Water-Based Size in even strokes across all areas you want to gild. Wash your brush or foam brush quickly and thoroughly in warm water.

When the size turns from milky-white to clear, it’s time to gild!

Place a square of leaf onto your work surface. Lay the painted letter or shape over the center of the leaf.

Drape and press the second leaf over the top of the letter or shape. Press evenly to make sure the leaf sticks to all the sized areas.

When all your gilding is done, do a final pressing down of leaf, then brush off the excess with a brush or piece of cotton. Save your skewing’s (gold leaf scraps) for a future fun project!

Give your dad a golden gift he’ll always treasure!
