Artist & Craftsman Supply: Who are you and what do you do?

Alex Mcfarlane: My name is Alex McFarlane I am an artist and craftsman based out of Portland, Maine. My primary focus right now comes in the form of encaustic art (a craft utilizing beeswax, tree sap and flame is one of the oldest forms of art yet is still somewhat uncommon today.) I find that this is a great medium to combine my technical woodworking skills with an artistic eye. The softness of the wax combined with the hardness of the wood and nails creates something truly unique and is an opportunity to change the view of everyday objects.

A&C: Did you go to school for art/what is your background?

AM: I went to school for Construction Technology. My working career has consisted of working in fine furniture building and home construction.

A&C: Do you have a favorite artist/piece of art?

AM: I don’t have a favorite artist or piece of art. I feel like that is such a hard question because art is everywhere and comes in so many forums. I have such a deep appreciation for all aspects of the term. With that said, I find great inspiration from my mentors Bill and Saer Huston, Owners of Huston & Company Furniture.

A&C: What drew you to art initially?

AM: Growing up I was always making things with my hands. My mother is an amazing artist, watching her create led me to view things with an artistic eye.

A&C: What is your go-to album/artist right now (in the studio)?

AM: Greensky Bluegrass - If Sorrows Swim.

A&C: If you’ve shopped with us, what do you like most about Artist & Craftsman Supply? What’s one thing you can’t leave an art store without buying?

AM: I love the large selection of panels in stock and can’t leave without picking up a bottle of white pigment powder.

A&C: How has your practice changed over time?

AM: It’s been really fun and exciting to watch the progression of my art. Each piece I create I try to improve on my methods and tweak my technique to get the piece I envisioned. The best part of working with the wax, is that it has a mind of its own. With each new piece, it reacts a little differently.

A&C: What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given (not necessarily art related)?

AM: Be safe, have fun.

A&C: What inspires you?

AM: I draw a lot of inspiration from nature. A lot of ideas come when I am out surfing. I will think of different patterns and frame combos.

A&C: What is your favorite place to visit where you live?

AM: The ocean, no matter where it is – up north, down south.
