DIY Decorations: Yarn Hat Ornaments

The coziest and cutest decorations we've ever seen!

Add a special touch to gift tags with these handmade ornaments! Get creative with patterns and add an unexpected pop of color to your holidays.

You’ll need:

Scissors

Retractable knife or X-Acto Knife (optional)

Yarn (assorted colors)

Cardboard Roll (like a paper towel roll)

Take your cardboard roll and cut it into several rings. These rings can be relatively thin, no larger than a half an inch. We used an X-Acto knife and cut through the roll (similar to cutting through a loaf of bread).

Cut your yarn into 10” pieces. For one hat we used 28 pieces of a solid base color and 14 pieces of an accent color. Whatever pattern you choose will determine exactly how much yarn you will need (you can always cut more!).

Fold one piece of yarn in half and loop the loose end through the ring. Fold over and tighten, making sure the knot is facing the outside of the ring. Repeat this in whatever pattern you choose until the ring is no longer visible. My pattern is four pieces of the solid color, two pieces of the accent color, repeat on and off.

Twist the loose ends together and push them through to the other side of the ring. Roll up a piece of tissue and place it in the hat to hold its shape.

Take an extra piece of yarn and tie the loose ends together. If you want to hang this as an ornament, make sure that piece is long enough to tie into a loop.
