DIY Decorations: Pom Pom Wreath

Let's get this pom pom party started! These wreaths are the perfect pop of creativity for any home during the holiday season. Use up old scraps of yarn or buy a new skein or two to create your own color scheme!

What you need:

Yarn

Decorative ribbon

Cord, twine or ribbon (to hang the wreath)

Scissors

Glue gun

Embroidery hoop

Embroidery thread

Pom pom maker

Make your pom pom:

For this DIY we used the 5-IN-1 TOOL: Robot Model (5" H) by Loome. Your pom pom-making process may vary depending on what type of tool you use. Don't have one? You can use your hand in a pinch! Click here learn how.

While we all may get there a different way, the process is pretty straight forward. Start by wrapping your yarn around your tool (we did 160 revolutions), making sure it’s not too tight and not too loose. Once you’ve finished wrapping, take your embroidery thread and tie it around the center of the yarn. Tie this as tight as humanly possible. If you have extra thread, flip it over and make another knot, then snip any extra embroidery thread. Once everything is secured, slip the yarn off of your tool, then cut the yarn down the center on each side, releasing the pom.

Now it’s time to trim your pom pom. Take a piece of cardboard and trace/cut out a circle (ours is about 2” in diameter). Hold this piece of cardboard on top of your pom while you’re trimming. Move it around as you trim, and it will act as a guide; helping keep the strands of yarn even. Once the yarn is at an even length, remove the piece of cardboard and continue to trim the pom until you’re happy!

ere’s a very helpful video from our friends at Loome showing you the process in full:

Once your pom poms are all assembled, unscrew your embroidery hoop, releasing the inner and outer hoop from one another. Take your ribbon (or twine, cord, etc.) and tie the two loose ends together. Loop it around the inner hoop, then secure the two hoops together making sure the ribbon is coming out of the top where the screw is located.

Glue pom poms onto the surface of your embroidery hoop, making sure you leave space at the bottom of the hoop for your ribbon. Once the pom poms are placed and the glue as dried, wrap your ribbon around the bottom of your hoop until wood is no longer visible. Tie a bow and adjust it so it fits in the center of each row of pom poms.
